To Lead the World: American Strategy after the Bush Doctrine
Melvyn P. Leffler, Jeffrey W. Legro
This book is a collection of ten essays which debate how best to strengthen American power, reassert hegemony over the international system, and restore the United States to a position of global respect and legitimacy. To Lead the World emphasizes that although unilateralism is dysfunctional and a robust internationalism is the sine qua non of global relations, nation-states still remain the essential fulcrum for meeting present and future threats. There is a clear American role in strengthening the international order against transnational dangers, and only a committed international order, guaranteed by American power, can properly respond to threats and stand firm against authoritarian regimes. American power remains essential because a liberalized world needs the public goods and military power that a global hegemon provides.
